CAPTAIN JANEWAY
Captain Janeway's pursuit of a Starfleet career followed the examples set by her mother, a theoretical mathematician and her father, a design engineer. Her father drowned under the Polar Ice Caps circa 2358. Janeway served as science officer onboard the USS Al-Batani, under the command of Captain Paris during the Orias expedition. Captain Janeway took command of the USS Voyager in 2371 and disappeared with her ship later that same year.

COMMANDER CHAKOTAY
Chakotay is from the Native American tribe that settled on a planet near the Cardassian border, in the DMZ (TNG:"Journey's End"). He follows many of their traditions,
including carrying a medicine bundle, and having a spirit guide that often advises him. He completed Starfleet Academy and advanced to the rank of Lieutenant Commander on the U.S.S. Merrimac. When his people were attacked by the Cardassians, Chakotay left Starfleet and joined the Maquis soon after it was formed. He commanded the Maquis ship that was taken to the Delta quadrant by the Caretaker. Once on board Voyager, he was made first officer of the joint crews and promoted to the rank of Commander. He is the only crew member that was on the Maquis ship who has experience as a Starfleet Officer.

LT B'ELANNA TORRES
Torres's father was human and her mother was Klingon. Her father left when she was young, and her mother raised her on a colony far from Qo'noS, the Klingon homeworld. Her conflicting human and Klingon ancestry often frustrates her. Torres does not keep in touch with her family. Torres attended the academy, but found it very difficult, and dropped out during her second year. She joined the Maquis and became the chief engineer on Chakotay's ship. Chakotay
thought that she was so good of an engineer that "She could teach at [Starfleet] Academy." She became Chief Engineer of Voyager after she helped free the ship from a quantum singularity. Torres was later abducted by the V'Dians, who split her into Klingon and human halves to test for resistance of her organs to the phage disease. Her Klingon half was killed in an escape attempt, but the Klingon DNA had to be re-introduced into the human body for Torres to survive. B'Elanna is currently "involved" with Tom Paris!

LIEUTENANT TOM EUGENE PARIS
Tom Paris comes from a family of distinguished Starfleet Officers. Several members of his family have carried the rank of admiral. It was very difficult for Tom to live up to his family's high expectations. He ended up causing the death of three officers on Caldik Prime-he falsified reports, then later admitted that it was his fault, and was promptly kicked out of Starfleet. Paris then joined the Maquis and was captured by the Federation during his first mission for them. Tom was serving his sentence at the Federation Penal Colony when Captain Janeway recruited him for the doomed mission to track down a missing Maquis ship in the badlands. Janeway granted him a field commission of Lieutenant and he now serves as conn officer on Voyager.
